If Wetzel is killed before he is convinced to hand it over, then Fort Avernum's underground level (Along with Fort Avernum itself) will become inaccessible for the entirety of the game. Like the fort itself, the underground level can only be accessed if Wetzel's Key has been obtained. The Item numbers are for reference only, since there is no (official) character editor by which you can add items to your party. In addition, a powerful and wicked demon lives the second part of the underground level, fueled by the unstable portal that was abandoned around the same time as the rest of the complex. The Arrival Caves are separated from the fort itself by a gate which is kept locked.
